Ireland's national LLM story is a language-preservation story rather than a frontier-model story. Ard-Intleacht na Gaeilge is a state-backed flagship aiming to deploy an Irish-language AI assistant for public services by 2026, explicitly to safeguard Irish in the digital realm. UCCIX (UCC, ECAI 2024) is the first open-source Irish Gaelic LLM — Llama 2-13B adapted on a small curated corpus, reportedly beating far larger multilingual models on Irish tasks by up to 12%.
