Profile note
Europe's attempt at an independent web index — the infrastructure prerequisite for both a non-US search engine and a non-Common-Crawl pretraining corpus. Five founding data centres (CERN, LRZ, IT4Innovations, DLR, CSC) plus nine research institutions. The OWI was in beta as the original grant ended 28 Feb 2026; continuity now depends on the successor project SOURCE and on the Open Search Foundation. This is the most under-funded strategically-important item in this file: €8.5M against a task that Google spends billions on annually.
